Brinda Karat and AIDWA activists arrested in TN

Brinda Karat Arrested
Chennai, Sep 12: Tamil Nadu police have reportedly arrested CPI-M Politburo member Brinda Karat along with some All India Democratic Women's Association (AIDWA) activists to prevent them form visiting a village which was hit by a clash between upper-caste Hindus and Dalits in 2008.

Karat along with AIDWA General Secretary Vasuki, Treasurer Jhansi Rani, State Secretary Thirumalli Rani and six others were arrested by Thirulparankundram police on Saturday, Sep 12, when they were on their way to Uthaopuram village in Madurai district.

Claiming that she had not committed any illegal act by going to the village for a private function, Karat said, "My car was blocked in the middle of the road without any reason. I asked them (police) under what order they are detaining us. They said they expect trouble in the village. I told the police that if there is trouble, you should arrest trouble-makers, not me."

While Police failed to give any reason for the arrest, Karat said she would complain to higher officials.

In 2008, a Dalit was killed in a police firing in the village last year following a clash over a dispute related to a local temple.

Assam: Left demands action against culprits

The matter was raised during Zero Hour in the Rajya Sabha by Ms Brinda Karat who strongly condemned the atrocities against tribals, particularly the 'barbaric act' in which an adivasi girl was stripped by a mob......

It is shocking that even in a state where a Dravidian Government under a Rationalistic Party is in power such atrocities on the Scheduled castes are taking place; and on top of it the Administration is evidently biased against the SCs instead of providing protection to them.Ms Brinda Karat's exclamation that if there was trouble then the trouble makers should be arrested but not the citizens going about their chores really worthy of a suo motu attention of the judiciary. The Chief Minister also should ensure unbiased performance by the Police instead of appeasing the Non-Scheduled Caste trouble makers.
