Opposition accuses Kerala Govt of leaking out cabinet decision, stages walkout

Thiruvananthapuram, Sep. 9 (ANI): Accusing the Kerala Government of giving cabinet decision documents on a corruption case to CPI-M's tainted leader Pinarayi Vijyan, the Congress-led Opposition staged a walk out of the Kerala Assembly on Wednesday.

Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan, however, denied the charges, saying that the documents were given to Vijayan as per rules and on the basis of a RTI application filed by him.

Vijayan is facing the charges of by passing the regulations while awarding a contract to a Canadian based company, SNC Lavalin for renovating three power plants when he was Kerala's power minister in 1997.

He had challenged the state Governor's decision to sanction his prosecution in the case in the Supreme Court and submitted documents related to the Cabinet decision against giving permission to prosecute and state Advocate General's views on the matter.

However, the Governor gave the sanction overlooking the Cabinet recommendation.

UDF alleged that government provided the papers to help Vijayan in the case by violating RTI Act rules.

Before the walkout, Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy said the government was setting a wrong precedent by providing Cabinet documents to general public that were classified. (ANI)
