UK convicts 3 in '06 airline bomb plot

London, Sep 8: Three British Muslims were convicted on Monday, Sep 7 for plotting to kill thousands of civilians by blowing up planes flying from London to America with home-made liquid bombs.

A jury at a London courthouse found Abdulla Ahmed Ali, Tanvir Hussaib and Assad Sarwar gulity of conspirarcy to murder by detonating explosives on aircraft. The trial started in Feb 2010.

The jury found that they were the ringleaders of a conspiracy to carry out the biggest terrorist attack since 9/11. Four other men were found not guilty of involvement in the suicide bomb plot.

The men's arrests in Aug 2006 led to new airport restrictions on liquids and brought chaos to travellers.

Prosecutor Peter Wright said, "The men planned to smuggle the bomb ingredients aboard jets bound from Britain to North America disguised as soft-drinks bottles, batteries and other innocuous items carried in hand luggage."

"The plot would have caused a civilian toll from terrorism on an almost unprecedented scale. The defendants all denied the charge, claiming they planned a stunt to make a political point."
