Lanka expels UNICEF official for pro-LTTE comments

Sri Lanka
Colombo, Sep 7: After punishing a journalist for criticising the war against Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), Sri Lankan government has ordered expulsion of an United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) official for allegedly promoting the Tamil rebels.

The United Nations (UN) has confirmed the reports and revealed that the visa for the spokesman for UNICEF in Sri Lanka, James Elder has been cancelled.

On the other hand, UNICEF has denied the allegations against James Elder, an Australian citizen.

Sarah Crowe, UNICEF spokeswoman for South Asia said, "James has been our voice and impartial advocate of the most vulnerable women and children. We want him to remain in the country and continue his work."

Crowe also added that UNICEF was ready to appeal the expulsion to the 'highest level' if it stands.
