PM defends Pokhran II, calls controversy needless

Manmohan Singh
Ramsar, Aug 29: Labelling the controversy over the 1998 Pokhran tests 'needless', the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said Pokhran II was a success, reaffirming what the former President APJ Abdul Kalam had already said.

Speaking to reporters, Dr Singh on Saturday, Aug 29, said "A wrong impression has been given by some scientists which is needless. Kalam has clarified that the tests were successful."

This came as a response to the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) scientist, K Santhanam's statement that the Pokhran II was just a frizzle and not a big bang.

He claimed that the test had not met the country's strategic objectives as the thermonuclear or hydrogen bomb was of low yield. Further, he said that the country needs to conduct more tests before it could sign CTBT.

However, these claims were contested earlier by P Chidambaram, the then chief of the Department of Atomic Energy who maintained a dismissive attitude about the statement.

Navy Chief Admiral Sureesh Mehta also argued against the senior scientist's statements saying that India's nuclear deterrence capabilities were proven capable enough.
