Haryana HC judge Kannan declares his assets

Supreme Court of India
New Delhi, Aug 23: Yet another High Court judge broke the silence on the controversy of Chief Justice of India's (CJI) stand on declaration of assets. This time, K Kannan, a Punjab and Haryana High Court judge declared his family assets public.

Kannan said, "Though I hold the view that judges are not in the same league as politicians and do not agree in principle with demands to keep their wealth details in the public domain, yet I want to prove a point that we"ve nothing to hide."

The judge is reportedly to have declared that he has Rs 1.03 lakh in bank deposits, investment of Rs 3.87 lakh and Rs 10.59 lakh as deposits in his wife's name.

Earlier, on Aug 21, Karnataka High Court judge, DV Shylendra Kumar in a newspaper article wrote that judges of the superior courts are not ready to disclose their assets.

In Jan 2009, lawyer and judicial accountability activist Prashant Bhushan had written to judges that they should voluntarily come forward to declare assets.

Prashant Bhushan said, "The Karnataka HC judge has shown a lot courage by telling the world that judges are not opposed to declaring their assets, now here is an exemplary case of voluntary disclosure by Justice Kannan."
