SM Krishna in Oz over the attacks on Indians

Sydney, Aug 6: The Union External Affairs Minister, SM Krishna is on a five day trip to Australia starting from Thursday, Aug 6 to discuss about the slew of attacks on Indian nationals in the country.

According to latest media reports, the minister has already landed in Sydney and has met few members of the Indian community to hear their grievances first hand before meeting the leaders.

He is also expected to meet the Indian community in Melbourne.

However, in his first meeting in Sydney he has learnt that Australia is not a racist country, say media reports quoting sources.

Over the past few months, there have been close to hundred attacks on Indians reported from the country and officials have identified that there might be a 'racist element' to these assaults.

Apart from the attacks, SM Krishna is expected to be talking about the issue of lifting of ban on uranium exports.

He will be meeting the Australian Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd and his Australian counterpart Stephen Smith in the visit.

Speaking to newspersons here he said the statement made by the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister reflected his statesmanship and it was welcome that the he had decided to deferred the implementation of the project until a popular government was established.....
