Private airlines call off Aug 18 strike

Private Airlines strike called off
New Delhi, Aug 3: The private airline operators on Sunday, Aug 2 called off the proposed Aug 18 strike. Federation of Indian Aviation (FIA) that called off the strike on behalf of the private carriers said that this decision was taken so that no inconvenience was caused to the public.

The FIA hoped to hold discussions with the Government over the problems threatening the aviation industry.

On Friday, Jul 31 the major private carriers like Kingfisher, JetAir, GoAir, Spicejet and IndiGo came together under FIA to call on a strike on Aug 18 to signify the seriousness of the problems the industry was facing.

The airline operators asked the government to provide bailout claiming that the increased ATF prices and taxes amid the global economic crisis were unbearable.Following this, the Aviation minister, Praful Patel warned the airlines against the strike as the DGCA could take action against them for disrupting flight schedules and causing public inconvenience. He also said that the government was in no position to provide financial aid to them.

Before the strike was formally called off by the FIA, carriers like MDLR Airlines, Paramount Airlines, Spice jet and IndiGo withdrew their particpation in the protest.
