Sibal pushes for education as fundamental right

Kapil Sibal
New Delhi, Aug 1: Calling it the tool to make India the 'knowledge hub', the HRD Minister, Kapil Sibal on Friday, Jul 31 put forth the Bill on the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education in the Lok Sabha.

Sibal said that this bill will not just porvide education but will make sure that the children aged between six and 14 get 'quality education'.

“As the name of the Bill suggests, it means education should be free for children and it is compulsory obligation on the part of the state governments and the Centre to ensure education for children between 6 and 14," Sibal said.

Strongly pushing the bill for consideration, the HRD minister requested that 'should not be any politics on the Bill as education concerns all'.

The Rajya Sabha has already approved the bill which will make education a fundamental right in the Constitution.

Responding to the proposal, BJP memeber, Mr Kirti Jha Azad said that the proposal was 'aadhi adhuri (half-hearted)' attempt. He also raised questions on the financial support required to implement such a proposal.
