New Delhi, Aug 1: Job losses due to the global economic crisis is shrinking, Labour Minister Mallikarjun Kharge told the Lok Sabha on Friday, Jul 31.

Even though the sectors like leather, transport and metals will continue to be affected by the recession, the unemployment caused in 2008 has declined, Kharge said.

Kharge assured the members of the house that the government has taken steps to deal with the unemployment situation, while responding to the Calling Attention Motion on the issue.

Quoting from a survey, Kharge said that in between Oct and Dec 2008 five lakh people lost their jobs.

However, in a survey that was conducted by the ministry between Jan and Mar 2009 showed that the situation in sectors like sectors like mining, textiles and gems and jewellery was improving. He said that the employment has increased in the IT sector.

Kharge, however, admitted that the government has to 'do more' to tackle the unemployment rates amid the economic crisis.
