Surge in number of rape cases in '07, MP tops list

New Delhi, Jul 29: Revealing that there was a steep increase in the number of rape cases in 2007, official data said that the state of Madhya Pradesh came out on the top of the list with a total of 3,010 rape cases.

Madhya Pradesh was followed by West Bengal with 2,106 cases and Uttar Pradesh with 1,648 cases. Bihar had reported 1,555 rape cases in the year 2007.

Delhi topped the list of number of cases in Union Territory with 598 rape cases out of the total 641 cases.

The situation in northeastern states were relatively better. The topper on this chart was Assam with 1,555 cases.

In the south, Andhra Pradesh had a maximum of 1,070 cases, followed by 523 in Tamil Nadu, 512 in Kerala and 436 in Karnataka.

According to the data, out of the total of 20,737 registered cases, police arrested 25,363 people and 5,022 were convicted.

Minor girl raped in East Godavari district

Kakinada, Jan 4: Police have launched a hunt for Avula Daveedu (19) who allegedly raped a minor tribal girl (12) while she was grazing cattle near a choultry on the outskirts of Jaggampet village in East Godavari District. The girl, who was allegedly raped on January 2, is sent for medical examination to Kakinada government general hospital, according to police sources. UNI.....
