Sudan: Woman gets 40 lashes for wearing trousers

Nairobi, Jul 29: Lubna Ahmed Hussein, a Sudanese woman journalist is said to suffer 40 lashes on Wednesday, Jul 29 for wearing trousers in Sudan.

Lubna, a columnist and public information officer at the United Nation Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) was arrested in Khartoum along with 13 other women in early Jul 2009.

Ten of the other women were given 10 lashes for breaching Islamic law, but Lubna demanded a lawyer and delayed her trial.

She has also invited local and foreign journalists to view trial.

United Nations, July 25: Britain and France softened a UN resolution today that would authorize up to 26,000 troops and police in Darfur by dropping a threat of ''further measures'' against Sudanese obstructing peace efforts. Sudan presidential adviser dies in crash

Khartoum, June 27: Sudan's powerful presidential adviser Majzoub al-Khalifa has been killed in a car accident in northern Sudan, a presidential source said today. ''He died in a car accident on his way to Shendi,'' the source said. ''He and his brother were killed and other members of his family were injured in the accident.'' It appeared Khalifa's car tyre blew which made the car flip. Their vehicle was the only one involved.....
