Allahabad, Jul 29: Indian Institute of Information Technology- Allahabad (IIIT-A) has reportedly slapped a hefty fine of Rs 50,000 on 19 students for allegedly ragging freshers.
"The action has been taken in view of the Supreme Court's judgement, whereby all centres of higher learning had been instructed to curb the menace of ragging by way of stringent and exemplary punishments," the spokesman of the IIIT-A, Mr Pankaj Mishra, said.
The incident was reported by the warden of the girls' hostel, Ms Shveta Singh to the IIIT-A director, Mr M.D. Tiwari. The director took this step of imposing a fine on the girls of B Tech II year along with withdrawing the scholarships of those who had it.
Mr Mishra however clarified that there was 'no physical or mental torture, a fact acknowledged by the warden herself'. The girls insist that they only called the first year students for a friendly 'chat'.
The administration has called the freshers involved in the incident to come forward and give their side of the story based on which further action will be taken, Mr Mishra added.
Ragging has come under the scanner of the authorities ever since there were increased number of deaths and abuse reported due to these incidents. The Supreme Court too recently passed a judgement directing the educational institutions to stop such abuse along with recommending a body set up for the same purpose.
