Guj rejects Prez's suggestions, passes GUJCOC

Ahmadabad, Jul 28: Turning down the President, Pratibha Patil's suggestions on the Anti terror Bill, the Gujarat government went ahead and passed the Gujarat Control or Organised Crime Act (GUJCOC) on Tuesday, Jul 28.

The state government that found that there was no law to deal with terrorism and related activities added the work 'terrorism' everywhere along organised crime.

The assembly passed the bill that does not carry the three changes suggested by the President earlier. The bill will now be sent for the President's approval.

When the GUJCOC was introduced in 2003 Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA) was already in place and therefore the state did not find it necessary to add the word terrorism.The bill which is based on the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MOCOCA) was passed by the state assembly in 2003, but the centre has been withholding consent for four years.

Therefore, while returning the bill, the President had suggested few changes. However, the Chief Minister Narendra Modi alleged that the centre was discriminating against Gujarat in passing the bill that is similar to that of Maharashtra's.
