W. Bengal Assembly debates attack on Congress workers

Kolkata, July 17 (ANI): West Bengal Assembly on Friday witnessed uproarious scenes and walk out by the opposition over Wednesday's attack on Congress Legislative Party workers near Mongolkote in Burdwan District.

As soon as the House assembled this morning, the opposition Trinamool Congress and Congress members demanded discussions on the issue and sought statement from Chief Minister Buddhadev Bhattacharjee.

The Speaker Hasim Abdul Halim dispensed the question hour and allowed the discussion.

Replying to the discussions in the House, Bhattacharjee admitted the failure of the police to give protection to the Congress Legislative Party workers.

Meanwhile, Kolkata observed a shutdown in protest against the attack.

Congress workers accused CPI (M) activists of attacking their party legislators and workers. Eight people were injured in the Mangalkot region of the state's Burdwan district.

Normal life was badly hit, as shops and business establishments remained closed due to the shutdown. No vehicle was seen plying on roads.

Irate Congress Party workers on Thursday set at least four buses on fire and blocked traffic across Kolkata. One of the buses was set on fire on Howrah Bridge that links Kolkata to the busy Howrah railway station. (ANI)

Twin blasts jolt Bengal-Assam border

Kokrajhar, Nov 30: At least two people were injured in separate blasts, which occurred on the Bengal-Assam border at Srirampur today. Police sources here said the first blast took place in a truck near the Srirampur check gate in Assam's Kokrajhar district at 1000 hrs. The bomb was planted below the oil tank of the truck that was bound for West Bengal. A school teacher was critically injured in the blast.
