Punjab villagers benefiting from Reverse Osmosis plants

Chandigarh, July 17 (ANI): Many Punjab villagers are benefiting from a clean drinking water programme run by a non-governmental organization, which is establishing Reverse Osmosis (R.O) plants.

So far, Naandi foundation has established 85 R.O plants, which are providing clean water to more than 450 villages.

The foundation began the project from Giddarbaha village as they found water impurity level high in the water.

"We started off from Giddarbaha as during pre testing we found high level of nitrates, sulphates, calcium and total dissolved solids in water sample," said Amiya Shanker, Project in-charge, Giddarbaha.

The villagers have been given cards, which they carry when they fetch R.O water providing taps.

Villagers have reported a decrease in cases of water borne diseases.

"The water of reverse osmosis (R.O) is good. Now we don't suffer from joint pain. Even the food cooked is tasty. We are using R.O water because we were suffering from disease because of tap water," said Harban Kaur, a villager.

Contaminated water is one of the main reasons for the spread of diseases like diarrhoea. (ANI)
