Google knows what'll make Androids sell, the price

Google Androids
New Delhi, Jul 16: Internet giant, Google which is planning to foray into the Indian mobile market with its Android phone, will likely rein it too. The company has learned that the the success of a product is determined by the accessibility and affordability in the price sensitive country.

"A lot would depend on the affordability and accessibility of the handsets. We would eventually like to see a wide spectrum of pricing and functionality with the Android-powered handsets," Google India Head (Products) Vinay Goel was quoted as saying in a news agency report.

Goel added that the handsets that are available at a price range of Rs 10,000-15,000 are expected to do well.

When asked if Google was interested in collaborating with HTC and Samsung who have expressed interest in launching Android handsets in India, Goel said, "We act as catalysts. It is up to the OEMs to determine the pricing and functions of the product."

Since Android is an open source operating system, it will be open to the developers to design applications independent of the handset type. The OS will only be developed by Google initially and with the release of it an an open source operating system, other developers may take it from there.
