Gandhi, Nehru letters auctioned for 17.5k pounds

London, Jul 15: A London auction house said, a series of letters written by Gandhi and Nehru and a piece of signed khadi cloth was sold for 17,500 pounds at a Sotheby's auction on Tuesday, Jul 14.

Mahatma Gandhi's items were brought jointly by Ghulam Noon, founder of Noon Produts and Nat Puri, founder of Purico Group.

The items comprised of three signed letters by Gandhi, a signed khadi cloth that was said to have been worn by him. Two signed postcards by Gandhi and a series of 29 letters by Jawaharlal Nehru to freedom fighter Mridula Sarabhai.

The Gandhi letters, written to Islamic scholar Maulana Abdul Bari was sold for 4,750 pounds; his khadi cloth for £2,125; the postcards from Gandhi to poet Hamidullah Afsar for 1,875 pounds; and the Nehru letters for £8,750. while Nehru's letters were brought by British trading company in books and manuscripts.

Patna, May 12: The six-km-long Mahatma Gandhi Setu over the Ganges, Asia's longest river bridge, has turned out to be a major death trap as more than 2000 people had lost their lives since 1982. Around 100 accidents had taken place on the bridge, the lifeline between North and South Bihar, since it was inaugurated by the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. As a result of poor maintenance, not only big holes had started.....
