First I've to go & find an office: Nandan Nilekani

Nandan Nilekani
Bangalore, Jul 13: Nandan Nilekani who was attacked with a slew of questions on the Government's Unique ID project, said "First I have to go and find an office."

The 'Infoscian' turned Government servant, who is appointed head the Unique Identification Authority (UIA) avoided questions on key challenges of the project by implying that the people have to wait.

"Let me go and take stock of the situation," he said when asked about the timeline set for the completion of the project.

He, however disclosed that one of the key goals of the UIA project is taking measures to avoid duplication of the ID cards which lead to fraud.

"...the big problem today with identity is that many systems have lot of duplicates which lead to fraud," he said after meeting Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa, who felicitated him on this assignment.

The project, which will create a centralised database of Indian residents, will ensure that everyone has a unique number. After this the UIA will create a system of verification so as to help people 'verify that somebody is who he claims he is'.
