SC furious over med colleges violating merit quota

New Delhi, Jul 9: Outrageous over the unaided private medical and dental colleges not following the rule that establishes 50 per cent quota for students passing the common entrance test (CET); the Supreme Court of India on Wednesday, Jul 8 warned of strict action against them.

The bench that comprised of Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan and Justices P Sathasivam and J M Panchal express contempt over the colleges for turning merit seats into management quota just so that they can charge capitation fees from the students.

"Every year, this is happening. We know how these tricks are played on students every year," the bench said.

The court also proposed to initiate a contempt proceedings against these colleges in Madhya Pradesh.

The issue started off with an expose done by the Times of India which revealed that these colleges were charging up to Rs 25 lakhs for a seat and were subverting merit that was based on the Common Entrance Test (CET).
