Government doesn't intervene in functioning of CBI: Chavan

New Delhi, July 9 (ANI): Minister of State in Prime Minister's office, Prithviraj Chavan said in the Rajya Sabha that the government does not intervene in the functioning of the Central Bureau of Investigation once the cases are handed over it.

Chavan in a written reply gave out details of total number of cases given to the CBI, which shows an increase in the number of cases given to the investigative agency year after year.

In 2006, the Government assigned 23cases to the CBI, 43 in 2007 and 51 cases in 2008 were assigned to the agency. (ANI)

US grants Rs 51 mln for oil exploration in Lanka

Colombo, Mar 15: Openly showing its interests in the potential oil and gas deposits in the war-ravaged Sri Lanka, the US has awarded a grant of Rs 51 million (474,000 dollars) to the Sri Lankan government to ''promote the energy security'' in the island nation.''The grant will fund technical assistance to the Ministry of Petroleum and Petroleum Resources Development in support of its efforts to develop a comprehensive oil and gas regulatory system and establish an organisational structure for the regulatory.....

Most Japanese want to end Iraq war support: Poll

Tokyo, Mar 15: More than two-thirds of Japanese want to end an air force mission backing up U.S.-led military activities in Iraq this summer, when the mandate for the mission expires, a newspaper poll said today.Sixty-nine percent of those polled said they wanted the troops pulled out, while 75 per cent said the war had been a mistake, the daily Asahi Shimbun said.Japan withdrew its 600 ground troops from southern Iraq last year after a non-combat reconstruction.....
