UN begins inquiry into Bhutto assassination

Islamabad, Jul 1: A UN spokesman said that a UN commission has been appointed to investigate the assassination of the former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto which started off on Wednesday, Jul 1.

The Commission is led by the Chilean ambassador to the United Nation, Heraldo Munoz, an Indonesian ex-attorney general and an Irish former police official.

Hiro Ueki, a UN spokesman in Pakistan said, "The six-month mandate of the Benazir Bhutto commission of inquiry has begun today. The commission is expected to visit Pakistan but the dates are not determined yet."

The UN spokesman also said that the commission will inquire into the facts and circumstances of the assassination and it has made it clear with Pakistan to determine 'the criminal responsibility of the perpetrators.'

Islamabad, Nov 14: Pakistan Government is set to mourn Benazir Bhutto's death by declaring December 27 as 'public holiday'. UN top Human Rights award on Benazir Bhutto

United Nations, Nov 26: The United Nations has reportedly decided to confer its top human rights award on former prime minister Benazir Bhutto. The award will be announced on December 10, when the UN Human Rights Day is observed across the world. The occasion also marks the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The Daily Times quoted UN sources as saying that UN General Assembly president Miguel d'Escoto Brockmann would officially communicate the decision to Pakistan President Asif Ali.....
