Srinagar, Jun 29: Even as the state tries to cool down after the uproar caused by the Shopian Double Murder case, Baramulla town of north Kashmir erupted in violent protests as a women alleged that she was harassed by police.

An indefinite curfew has been imposed in the town under the section 144 as one person died in the violence and several others were critically injured in the protests.

According to official sources, the police opened fire after teargas shelling and baton charge failed to disperse the mob that was protesting against local policemen who allegedly misbehaved with a woman in a police station on Sunday, Jun 28.

“Curfew has been imposed in the town to maintain law and order," Deputy Commissioner Baramulla Latif-u-Zaman Deva was quoted as saying in a news report. The situation is being monitored.

The police have denied the woman's allegations. The police revealed that the woman's husband Mohammad Yousuf Bhat was brought into the police station for questioning in connection with the abduction of a teenage girl by her brother.

"The woman came to the police station and sought release of her husband. She threatened to end her life when police asked her politely to leave the police station and produce her brother," a police spokesman clarified.
