B'desh: Fatwa metes out 202 whips against widow

Dhaka, Jun 29: Alleged 'anti-social activty' brought down 303 whip lashes against a widow and a man in southeastern Bangladesh, following a fatwa issued by a religious leader.

40 year old widow, Piara Begum was whipped 202 times while lashes of 101 were, meted out to 25 year old Mamun Miah in front of hundreds of people on Saturday, Jun 28 at Khaiyar in Comilla district.

The woman who is reportedly injured as in a critical conditions. She was admitted in a hospital right after she fell unconscious after receiving the whip lashes. The doctors say that she is in need of intensive treatment.

Since such punishments under a fatwa is considered illegal in Bangladesh, the police have arrested six people, including Moulana Mohammed Manirul Islam, a religious leader working in the local madrassa acting on the complaint filed by the victim in Debidwar police station under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act.
