Pak: Indian prisioner, Sarabjit gets a new lawyer

Sarabjit Singh
Islamabad, Jun 27: Indian prisoner, Sarabjit Singh who is detained in Pakistan and convicted for 1990 bomb blasts got a new lawyer on Saturday, Jun 27. Newly appointed, Owif Sheikh will now fight the case and is expected to file an appeal to the court soon.

This move comes after Sarabjit's previous lawyer Rana Abdul Hamid failed to appear for Sarabjit's hearing on Wednesday, Jun 24 which led to the Pakistan Supreme court rejecting Sarabjit's mercy plea citing non pursuance of case as the lawyer failed to appear in court twice.

Sheikh will be filing an appeal that states that the previous lawyer was not present at the time of the Supreme court's hearing and will be requesting the government to abolish death penalty on humanitarian grounds.

Sarabjit Singh is on the death row as he was convicted for involvement in the 1990 bomba blasts that killed 14 in Pakistan. However, the Indian government maintains that drunk Sarabjit unknowingly crossed the border and had nothing to do with the blasts.
