Chennai: Guyanese Kids detained at hospital

Frontier Lifeline Hospital, Chennai
Chennai, Jun 27: Ten children and two adults from Guyana were detained at the Frontier Lifeline Hospital, Chennai on Friday, Jun 26 for hours as the NGO that brought them in for surgeries failed to pay for the cardiac operations.

An international NGO, Kids First Fund that has been coming to the Frontier Lifeline Hospital for the last four years for heart surgeries for needy children and adults, media reports say.

This was the sixth time the NGO has come to the hospital with 10 children and 2 adults for heart surgeries. However, when the NGO co-ordinator, Varshnie Singh tried to leave the hospital with the children after the surgeries were done, the hospital authorities detained her demanding for the payment of bills.

Varshine Singh who refuses to pay the 89,200 dollars' bill said that she usually paid the bill after she left the country and raise funds for the payment.

"The hospital is demanding we pay it in full. But how can we do this? We need to raise the funds after we get back. As we are an NGO, we need to hold fund raising event which will take some time,"" she said.

The children who were detained in a room, made distress calls by holding up cards that read 'Help US' against the glass window.

While the hospital alleged that they have faced payment problems for some time now, the police who have taken up the case have said that it is a sensitive case as there is no written agreement on the financial aspect.

It must be noted here that frontier Lifeline has been one hospital that has been service oriented. They have reached out to more than 12,000 patents across the nation through the various cardiac camps they have conduct through out the year Though this incident is very unfortunate, the hospital did treat the kids with care until they left the premises. The hospital has apologized and has even assured that such things would never happen in the future. The service done by the hospital cannot be overlooked because of this once incident It is a good lesson to be learnt that all financial transactions should go in writing.
