Afzal Guru's execution will take time: Moily

Afzal Guru
New Delhi, Jun 27: Answering a question on Afzal Guru's delayed execution, the Law Minister, Veerappa Moily on Friday, Jun 26 said the delay was inevitable as 'you cannot pick, choose and hang'.

Maintaining what he had said earlier, Moily reminded those gathered at 'meet the press' programme organised by Press Association in New Delhi, that there were many mercy petitions pending and Afzhal Guru's execution will have to wait till these petitions are cleared off.

"You cannot pick, choose and hang. Nowhere does it happen in the world including Pakistan," Moily said.

Afzal Guru from Pakistan, is a prisoner in India who is convicted in the 2001 Parliament attack case. Guru has been sentenced to death but his execution is put on a wait as his mercy petition with the President of India is still pending.

Saying that there are still about 28 mercy petitions pending before Afzhal Guru's can be addressed, Moily admitted that there was need for bringing in a way to ensure quick disposal of mercy petitions.

Recently, the Indian prisoner detained in Pakistan for the 1990 bomb blasts -Sarabjit Singh's mercy petition with the Pakistan Supreme Court was rejected as the Lawyer failed to pursue the case.
