Judges may have to declare their assets soon

Veerappa Moily
New Delhi, Jun 26: In what seems to be an effort to clean up the judicial system, the Law minister, M Veerappa Moily on Friday, Jun 26 announced that the government will bring in a legislation which will ensure that the judges declare their assets and liabilities.

"I have sent the file to the law secretary to study the draft and I expect the study to be over in next two days," Moily said.

"The judges are going to declare the assets and liabilities. It is wrong to assume that they (judges) are against it. We are not on a confrontational line with the judiciary," he added unwilling to divulge in further details. The minister has said that draft legislation would be introduced in the budget session which commences on Jul 2.

For a while now, the judges of the apex court, high courts and city courts have not been asked to reveal their assets and liabilities in the public. They, however, file a statement about their assets and liabilities with the chief justice of India (CJI). The issue of whether this kind of information can be made public or not added with new cases of corruption in the judicial system, has been a matter of debate.
