UK to unveil Gandhi's statue on Jun 26

London, Jun 26: A statue of Mahatma Gandhi, the father of Indian nation, will be unveiled by British Home secretary Alan Johnson in the east Midlands town of Leicester on Friday, Jun 26. Hundreds of Mahatma Gandhi's followers from across Britain are expected to attend the event.

The unveiling will mark the culmination of two-year campaign by Samanwaya Parivar, an Indian charity organisation headed by Swami Satyamitranand. Shiv Shankar Mukherjee, Indian High Commissioner and Labour MP from Leicester East Keith Vaz will also attend the event.

Vaz said, "It is absolutely wonderful that the new Home Secretary has agreed to attend and to unveil the new statue at this exciting occasion. I am so proud that only the second statue of Mahatma Gandhi in the United Kingdom will be based in Leicester."

He also said, "This is the most important event of the year for the British Asian community and people are travelling from all over the UK for the event. This statue is an excellent symbol of Mahatma Gandhi's and Leicester's commitment to diversity."

Sees progress on new Iran sanctions: US official

Washington, Mar 2: Major powers made progress on agreeing on new sanctions on Iran and hope to have their UN ambassadors begin drafting a formal UN Security Council resolution next week, a senior US official said.The official told Reuters that political directors representing the United States, Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany ''were able to resolve most of the issues'' in a two-hour conference call yesterday and hoped to complete their deliberations in another conference call tomorrow.Reuters.....
