'No racism, its street violence in Australia'

Mukesh Haikerwal - AMA President
Melbourne, Jun 14: While the attacks on the Indian students continue unabated in Australia, some Indians believe that the sporadic attack incidents have nothing to do with racism.

Former Australian Medical Association president Mukesh Haikerwal, who himself was brutally smashed in 2008, said that the attacks were not related to issues of racism, but were actually 'street violence.'

"I don't believe Australia is more racist than any other country and calling something a racial attack doesn't disguise the fact that all these things are wrong," The Age quoted Haikerwal, as saying.

He said that the recent incidents were likely a result of street or party violence, and that it did not involved people of any particular colour or ethnic identity.

"I don't run away from the fact that I am of Indian origin, but I was one of seven people attacked that night, and I was the only person with any kind of colour," Haikerwal said, while recalling last year's attack on him that nearly killed him.

Dismayed by the situation, Haikerwal said it is very important to find out the reason behind the attacks.

"We really have to work out why this is happening and send the message that violence is unacceptable in our society," he said.

Mukesh Haikerwal know how to talk. He learned from Indian Politicians who always say "There is no caste system in India, there is no untouchablity in India". We all know how the Indian society works.
