Ahmadinejad wins Prez polls, protests rock Iran

Tehran, Jun 14: Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the Iran President claimed landslide victory in the Presidential election held on Friday, Jun 12. However the opposition parties accused the hard-line President of using fraud to win election and protested and clashed with the police on Saturday, Jun 13, pelting them with stones and setting fires in Tehran.

The Islamic Combatant Clergy Association (ICCA), which is close to former president Mohammad Khatami and supported Mir-Hossiein Moussavi, one of the key contender of Presidential polls, said on its website that the election should be nullified and held again in a calmer, more logical and more just atmosphere. ICCA accused that the counting process were widely manipulated and said there was enough evidence to prove the manipulation and to nullify the election.

"We will not leave Moussavi alone," the ICCA said in its statement. Meanwhile Moussavi, the reformists new hero declared himself the 'true winner of the Presidential polls and urged the supporters to resist a government based on 'lies and dictatorship'.

Violent protests were reported continuing in Tehran and parts of Iran. Reports also suggest that in some parts of the capital city mobile phone system was down. It is believed that government has blocked the pro-Moussavi Websites and Facebook to block liberal voices.

Ahmadinejad says Iran won't give up nuclear plans

Algiers, Aug 4: Iran will not give up its atomic energy programme, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said in remarks published today before a visit to fellow OPEC-member Algeria. ''Iran has not demanded more than its right to nuclear energy. We are not ready to give up a single inch of this right,'' Ahmadinejad said in an interview with Algerian newspaper El Watan. ''We will continue our efforts within the framework of international law. I can say that.....
