London, June 11 (ANI): A plane passenger was able to take a six-inch serrated knife past airport security but was stopped before boarding for carrying a bottle of water.
Adrian Elvy, who was flying from Bristol to Barcelona and owns a stock delivery company, said he forgot to take care of the knife, which he uses to open boxes in his warehouse, while packing.
The 39-year-old revealed he was stopped by authorities after they saw a bottle of water in his bag and missed the knife, which features a serrated edge and a separate three-inch 'spike' for loosening sailing knots.
It was only when Elvy was fishing for some money did he realise that he was carrying the probable weapon in his luggage, and subsequently approached the checkers on his own.
"I went over to a policeman and told him that I had a knife accidentally in my luggage," The Telegraph quoted him as saying.
"The knife is all metal and was in the side pocket of the bag so must have been visible. I don't know how they missed it.
"When he saw it he said he gobsmacked, he told me I was as good as on the plane. He took the knife off me and asked which X-ray machine I had been through, I was really surprised they hadn't spotted it.
"It's quite worrying when you think about the security checks there are supposed to be these days and they can't even spot a dangerous blade like this.
"I know there are rules about liquids on planes and I'm glad they spotted that, but then to just send me to the plane with something like this in my luggage is ludicrous," he added.
A spokesman for Bristol Airport said: "We do not comment in detail on security issues. However, I can confirm that the security process for detection is continually monitored and subject to audit from the Department for Transport.
"Following any report of this nature an internal investigation is undertaken to ensure procedures are being followed correctly.
"We thank Mr Elvy for acting responsibly in bringing the matter to our attention, and remind all passengers of the need to take care when packing hand baggage." (ANI)
