Libya's Treki, new UN General Assembly President

United Nations, Jun 11: Ali Abdessalam Treki, the Libian politican will be the next president of UN General Assembly. Treki, who has been in charge of Libia's relationship with the African Union, won the election on Wednesday, Jun 10 by acclamation rather than a vote in the General Assembly.

The one-year post rotates among the 192 nations on a regional basis. Treki, Libya's minister for AU affairs, will assume the new job when the assembly convenes in mid-Sep for its annual high-level ministerial debate. He replaces Miguel d'Escoto Brockmann, the controversial a Roman Catholic priest. Brockmann was known for his open leftist views. Treki had also served earlier as Libya's UN ambassador.

Treki's new role as General Assembly president requires him to make the goals of the international community his first priority. D'Escoto said Wednesday, Jun 11 that Treki will lead 'with the same passion and determination that have inspired my presidency.'

Sees progress on new Iran sanctions: US official

Washington, Mar 2: Major powers made progress on agreeing on new sanctions on Iran and hope to have their UN ambassadors begin drafting a formal UN Security Council resolution next week, a senior US official said.The official told Reuters that political directors representing the United States, Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany ''were able to resolve most of the issues'' in a two-hour conference call yesterday and hoped to complete their deliberations in another conference call tomorrow.Reuters.....
