Oz: Indian leaders call for end to protests

Melbourne, Jun 11: In an emergency meet held on Wednesday, Jun 10, the Indian community leaders in Australia asked the Indian students to stop violent protests in Harris Park in Melbourne.

Indian students are continuing their street protest against the racially motivated attacks by alleged groups of Middle East men. However after the meeting the protest was disbanded. The meeting which was attended by the community leaders, the Consulate General of India, police officials and students agreed that there was no need for continued rallies. Meanwhile, the attack on Indian students, have strained the Indo-Oz relations. Union Tourism Minister Kumari Selja, postponed her trip to Australia which was scheduled in Jul. The Tourism Ministry had planned a series of promotional programmes in Australian cities in Jul to showcase India as an attractive adventure tourism destination.

Kumari Selja, said to media persons that the current atmosphere was not conducive to such a promotional event and the ministry will work out a new schedule after the situation improves.

Racial Attack on Indian students in Australia

Melbourne, May 26: Four Indian students were allegedly assaulted in their homes by a couple of teenagers in Melbourne. The Indian students who hail from Andhra Pradesh were reportedly injured and one is in serious condition.
