Sena attacks Reliance over hike in power prices

Vehicles torched in protests
Mumbai, Jun 9: The Shiv Sena activists on Monday, Jun 8 got on to the streets protesting against the hike in Reliance's power prices. The protesters attacked Reliance Energy head office, pelted stones at the police and torched at least four vehicles.

The protests sparked off on Monday afternoon, Jun 8 when Sena leader Anil Parab led a mob of about 500 activists including many women to the Reliance Headquarters, located adjacent to the busy Western Express Highway (WEH) in the Santa Cruz suburb. The activists who threw stones at the building even beat up the security personnel of the building when they tried to stop them.

The violence led to public inconveniences as the traffic at WEH came to a standstill. The police on Tuesday, Jun 9 had to resort to lathi charge to contain the violence and disperse the crowd in order to get the traffic back on track.

While the Reliance Officials claim that the increase in the bills were due to the hike in fuel prices, Shiv Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray justified the violent protests carried out by his party members and said that there was not logic behind the hike in the prices.
