Hurrriyat leader Geelani arrested for leading violent protests in Srinagar

Srinagar, Jun.7 (ANI): Security officials have arrested hardline Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani for leading street protests against the alleged rape and death of two women.

According to sources, Geelani, along with Ayaj Akbar and Ghulam Nabi Sumji, were arrested late last night.

The KasmirValley is witnessing violent protests over the last few days against the alleged rape and murder of two women in Shopian.

Local residents had alleged that two women had been abducted, raped and killed by security forces on Friday in Srinagar's Shopian town.

However, authorities have denied the killing and said that they had drowned in a stream.

Jammu and Kashmir"s chief minister, Omar Abdullah, has ordered a judicial inquiry into the deaths.

As the situation remained tense, security personnel are patrolling the deserted streets of Srinagar to maintain law and order. (ANI)

Jaya appeals to Mamata to call off her fast

Chennai, Dec 27: Former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and AIADMK Supremo J Jayalalithaa has appealed to Trinamool Congress President Mamata Banerjee to call off her fast, which entered 24th day today. A release from the AIADMK office tonight said, Ms Jayalalithaa had written a letter to Mamata Banerjee appealing her to call off the fast. Ms Jayalalithaa also telephoned her and urged her to call off the fast, the release added. A.....
