Kansas, Jun 1: Dr George Tiller, who was a provider of abortions was reportedly shot dead on Sunday, May 31. The 51-year-old gunman who fled was detained three hours later in suburban Kansas City.
The Wichita deputy police chief Tom Stolz who informed that the gunman has been arrested refused to give out other information. However, Johnson County sheriff's spokesman Tom Erickson identified the detained man as Scott Roeder.
The doctor who was a provider of late-term abortions despite decades of protests and attacks was killed in a church where he was serving as an usher. Dr Tiller, who is sometimes even referred to as 'baby-killer' has long been the focus of national anti-abortion groups.
On the shooting US president Barack Obama said, "I am shocked and outraged by the murder of Dr George Tiller as he attended church services this morning. However profound our differences as Americans over difficult issues such as abortion, they cannot be resolved by heinous acts of violence."
