New delhi, May 28: Akhilesh Yadav, son of Mulayam Singh Yadav is likely to be the new chief of Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh after the party realised the necessity to restore young appearance as Lok Sabha seats fell from 39 to 23 in the recently held General Elections 2009.
Party sources confirmed the news that Akhilesh is the new face of SP in state. Akhilesh has won both seats in Kannauj and Firozabad which he contested. Akhilesh entered Parliament for the first time in 2000 after wining the by-elections. Since then he has presented himself as family oriented and tech savvy man.
A party leader said, "Akhilesh comes without any baggage. The party top brass realises that Akhilesh is the only person in the party who can stand up to the Congress onslaught. After Rahul Gandhi, there is all the more reason to toss him into the high sea and find out if he can swim."
The party leader also acknowledges that Akhilesh can be a truly national in character and he can take the party beyond its core vote bank politics of Yadavs and Muslims.
When Mulayam Singh and his party memebers were against the computer education and English Language in the party manisfesto, Akhilesh stated that the his party was misunderstood. "Samajwadi Party is not against English. The point one was trying to make is that English shouldn't be made mandatory and that computers shouldn't harm the cause of skilled labourers," says Akhilesh, who has studied in Australia and is always armed with a Blackberry. He even has his profile on social networking websites like Orkut and Facebook.
