Pak: SC allows Sharif brothers to contest polls

Islamabad, May 26:Making way for the the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) to return to the federal government, the Supreme Court of Pakistan on Tuesday, May 26 allowed former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and his brother Shahbaz Sharif to contest elections.

The Supreme Court heard the review petitions filed by y Nawaz Sharif and Shahbaz Sharif against their disqualification in relation to in a plane hijacking case and corruption case respectively.

"It is an independent verdict of an independent judiciary," Nawaz Sharif said. Adding that he does not have the details of the verdict he maintained that he always had 'good expectations from the judiciary'.

The Sharif brothers in Feb '09 were stripped off their rights of contesting in elections and holding office. In Mar the elder brother took part in the 'long march' to reinstate the Supreme Court and high court judges who were sacked by Pervez Musharraf. Finally in Mar '09 when the protesters reached Islamabad and the judges were reinstated and the government also agreed to back the Sharif's review petition in the Supreme Court.
