India concerned over Tamils suffering: PM

Manmohan Singh - Indian Prime Minister
Chennai, May 10: Indian Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh said that though India is 'deeply concerned' over the sufferings of Srilankan Tamils, there where limits to what it can do to stop killings there.

He added that all 'Indians' felt that the 'Tamil people have been badly treated' in the island nation. When asked why India could not influence Sri Lanka to end the war, Dr Manmohan Singh said, "We are living in very uncertain times." He added that India's neighbours were sovereign nations and 'sometimes we can hurt the wider national interests' while dealing with particular situations.

Prime Minister said that the need of the hour is to bring out the ethnic civilians trapped in the war zone and provide relief and succour to the Tamils displaced. He also criticised AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa for threatening to send Indian Army to Sri Lanka to carve out an independent Tamil state. "We are dealing with a sovereign state. You can't send the Army to a sovereign state. There is something called international law. All these constraints are known to those who are making tall promises," the PM said.
