Jacob Zuma, new South African President

Durban, May 7: South African parliament on Wednesday, May 7 elected Jacob Zuma as the President of the country with a thumping majority. The parliament which convened for the first time after he led ANC to a landslide win.

67-year-old Zuma bagged 277 votes as against his opponet Mvume Dandala, who got 47 votes. Three votes were cancelled. Zuma, 67, was nominated by Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, the former wife of South Africa's first democratic president, Nelson Mandela.

In her nomination Winnie Mandela said, "Mr Zuma has triumphed against all odds. He is a man of the people and I have no hesitation in nominating him as our next president," she said.

Rev Mvube Dandala, belong to the newly formed Congress of the People(COPE).

Ex-CM seeks body to supervise fair polls in J

Srinagar, Nov 6: Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and Awami National Conference (ANC) president G M Shah today demanded consitution of an impartial body of eminent people such as former Prime Ministers Atal Bihari Vajpayee, V P Singh and I K Gujral for supervising and ensuring free and fair elections in the state.
