No more Swine Flu, it is now H1N1 influenza

Swine Flu Outbreak
Geneva, May 1: Giving in to the pressure from the meat industry, the World Health Organisation (WHO) changed the new pandemic's name from Swine Flu to H1N1 influenza.

WHO on Thursday, Apr 30 said, "From today, W.H.O. will refer to the new influenza virus as influenza A(H1N1)."

Even though the new strain is derieved from a swine influenza virus, it is a product three other strains in combination, one of which is the bird flu virus.Furthermore, the strain only affects people and no pig has been confirmed to be affected by it. And WHO has consistently said that eating pork that has been prepared well would cause no harm.

The Pork Industry was worst hit by the flu as people were jittery over buying pork products due to the name 'swine flu'. The name has led to ban on import of pork products from Mexico and United States. US and European food producers and governments have been calling for the change of the name ever since.
