New Delhi, Apr 21: Navin Chawla on Tuesday, Apr 21 took over the office of the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) following the retirement of N Gopalaswami on Monday, Apr 20.
V S Sampath who is presently the Power Secretary of the Election Commission will take over the role of Election Commissioner filling in the former post of Chawla.

This is the first time a Chief Election Commissioner has stepped down while the polling was in process. Navin Chawla will be overseeing the remaining four phases of the Lok Sabha polls.
