Security tightened for polls, India ready to vote

New Delhi, Apr 15: India will go into the first-phase of polls on Thursday, Apr 16 with a total of 1,715 candidates contesting for 124 seats. The various regions have been assessed and appropriate security measures have been undertaken.

The Election Commission has dubbed the 23,000 areas that will be going into polls on Thurday as 'vulnerable' and now it is the responsibility of the central and state governments to ensure peaceful election.

Deputy Election Commissioner R. Balakrishnan has promised to deploy Central paramilitary forces along with state security forces at the polling booths. The government has also ordered for a stringent check on the state borders to prevent movement of criminals and liquor.

With the new photo electoral cards the polling is expected to take place smoothly without any false votes.

The campaigning ended on Tuesday, Apr 14 and the country is now all set to vote.

The elections will take place in five phases on April 16, 22, 23, 30 and May 7 and 13 throughout the country. However, the different regions and states will have varying number of phases and dates.

The counting is scheduled to happen on May 16 and the 543-member House is to be constituted by June 2.

Lok Sabha polls from April 8-May 15: Quraishi

London, Jan 28: S Y Quraishi, the Election Commissioner of India said that the next General Elections in India will take place between April 8 and May 15. "We, in the Election Commission, have not yet discussed the final dates, but it will be held between April 8 and May 15," Quraishi said after delivering a lecture on 'Jammu and Kashmir Elections 2008', at the India House in London.Shiv Shanker Mukherjee, the Indian High Commissioner to United Kingdom.....
