US eases embargo against Cuba

Barack Obama
Washington, Apr 14: Obama has lifted the embargo limiting family travel and money transfers to their homeland by Cubans in the United States, and also allowing American telecommunications firms to start providing service for Cubans on Monday, Apr 13.

This move, however, does not eliminate the trade restrictions between US and Cuba. But what ever has been achieved so far is seen as a way for the two nations to improve their relationships.

"The president has directed that a series of steps be taken to reach out to the Cuban people to support their desire to enjoy basic human rights," said White House spokesman Robert Gibbs.

He added, "These are actions he has taken to open up the flow of information."

The United States is also hoping that these new measures will help the one-party state grow into a democracy.

However, former Cuban Leader Fidel Castro on Tuesday, Apr 14 asked Obama why there was no mention of the 'harshest of measure' referring to the economic blockage.
