Varun to explain 'hate speech' to EC on Mar 20

New Delhi, Mar 20: BJP leader Varun Gandhi will have to file a reply with the Election Commission (EC) on Friday, Mar 20 citing his inflammatory speech in Pilbhit as part of election rally.

The EC has asked Varun to give his reply by 11 am on Friday, Mar 20.

Putting the onus on Varun Gandhi, Chief Election Commissioner N Gopalaswamy said that it was for the BJP Lok Sabha candidate to prove that the video showing him making anti-Muslim comments was tampered with.

"We have seen the video. The video was not taken by us. He has said that the tape is doctored. It is for him to prove this," Gopalaswamy told reporters.

On what action was being contemplated against Varun, he said, "We have already taken action."On Thursday, Mar 19 Varun tried to cover his back, desperately looking for options to avoid arrest.

He first petitioned the Allahabad High Court for quashing the FIR against him, and has also filed for anticipatory bail in the Delhi High Court fearing arrest.

Criminal Case against Varun Gandhi: EC
