No secular government possible without Congress: Amar Singh

Lucknow, March 15 (ANI): Samajwadi Party General Secretary Amar Singh on Sunday said there is no alternative to the Sonia Gandhi-led Congress if anyone, irrespective of party, wants to form a secular government at the Centre.

"If anyone has plans to launch a drive against the Lal Krishan Advani-led BJP, be it Prakash Karat (of CPIM) or anyone else, the attempt cannot be successful without Sonia Gandhi," said Singh during a public rally here.

"I was not acting subservient or doing flattery when I praised Sonia Gandhi earlier,"" Singh added.

"When everyone left the Congress party in the recently held elections in Punjab, Uttarakhand and Karnataka in a whirlpool, it was only Samajawadi Party which blessed that party," Singh said.

"By expressing her priorities in national politics, the Samajwadi Party has only acted practical and done a job of a gainer," said Singh over his party's coming close to Congress.

Attacking Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati, Singh said she owed an explanation to public over her growing closeness and off and on relations with the BJP over the years if she stuck to claims of forming a secular government at Centre.

"If Mayawati is so eager to form secular government, she should explain her long-held relations with the BJP in whose lap she has been sitting for long. She should explain her closeness with the BJP, especially about her meeting with Gujarat CM Narendra Modi," Singh questioned.

He also criticised Orissa Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik's newly developed fascination for the jumble of parties called the 'Third Front'.

Amar Singh said: " Naveen didn't break off his relation with BJP because of recent attacks on people. Instead, he opted for that because of the 'dealings' with Advani didn't work out." (ANI)
