Meghalaya government loses majority

Shillong, Mar 11: The Meghalaya Progressive Alliance (MPA) government lost majority after one MLA withdrew support on Wednesday, Mar 11. The NCP-led government lost majority after KhunHynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) party's lone MLA Paul Lyngdoh, quit the government. Earlier two independents have pulled out of the alliance.

Lyngdoh tendered his resignation to Chief Minister Donkupar Roy on Wednesday, Mar 11. In his resignation Lyngdoh said, "I have learnt through reliable sources that one of the chief architects of MPA, PA Sangma, has been holding parleys with Congress for the formation of an alternative government, thereby violating the spirit of the alliance. In the light of the developments, I deemed it fit to be in liberty to walk out of the coalition."

One year old ruling coalition MPA now has 30 MLAs in the 60-member Assembly.

Australian aid of $330,000 for HIV/AIDS progs in NE

New Delhi, May 22: Australia announced an additional aid of 330,000 USD for the HIV/AIDS and drugs prevention programmes in Nagaland, Meghalaya, Manipur and Mizoram. The funds will be utilised for the project, 'Prevention of Drugs and HIV/AIDS in India' to be implemented by the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).
