BJD keeps options open for post-poll alliance

Naveen Patnaik
Bhubaneswar, Mar 10: It may be all over for the BJP and the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) in Orissa, but the umbrella NDA is still hopeful the BJD will go with them in the general elections 2009.

Keeping its options open for the post-election scenario, the ruling BJD in Orissa on Tuesday, Mar 10 said that it was not part of any front or political formation at the moment despite its new-found bonhomie with the Left.

"We are neither part of the NDA, UPA nor Third Front," BJD Secretary General Damodar Rout told reporters here on the eve of the Naveen Patnaik-led govt's trial of strength in the assembly on Wednesday, Mar 11

Damodor Rout expressed that neither the Congress nor BJP are their enemy. They are just their political opponents and they would campaign against them during elections.

The BJD would take a stand on joining any front only after the elections, he said. It's a big day for Naveen Patnaik in Orissa on Wednesday, March 11, after the BJP withdrew support from the govt following break down of talks over seat-sharing.

In the Orissa Assembly, the BJD needs to have at least a simple majority of 74 votes.
