IPL to tweak schedule to avoid poll clash: Jaiswal

Allahabad, Mar 6 (ANI): Union Minister of State for Home Sriprakash Jaiswal has welcomed the decision of the Indian Premier League (IPL) to reschedule their matches keeping the general elections in view.

Jaiswal said security forces could not be spared in enough numbers due to their commitment towards the general elections.

"There cannot be any compromise with the schedule of the general elections. We cannot alter the dates, but there was scope in changing the schedule of the IPL matches," Jaiswal told reporters here on Thursday.

The Twenty20 tournament will go ahead despite security concerns, but some fixtures are being rescheduled to avoid a clash with general election dates, an IPL tournament director said on Thursday.

The league, involving many international players, has been thrust into the security spotlight in the wake of Tuesday's militant attack on Sri Lankan players in Pakistan.

Foreign players are raising concerns over travelling to the subcontinent after the attack.

The rescheduling would ensure no matches are held in cities when elections are being held. New Delhi, Chandigarh, Jaipur, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore and Hyderabad are the venues for matches. (ANI)

''Cricket needs to go down a path to . . . create a window for the IPL. That will act as a reasonable safeguard from early retirements, but it won't stop all,'' May said. ''It's common sense, otherwise international.....
